How does an airbag vest work and what protection does it offer the rider?

An airbag safety vest works in a similar way to an airbag in a car. The vest has a built-in gas cylinder that is activated when the rider’s connection strap is separated from the safety line attached to the saddle, which happens when the rider falls off the horse. Bhoof’s airbag vest inflates in 90-170 milliseconds and protects vital areas of your body such as your back, lower back, chest, neck, and cervical vertebrae. The airbag is

How does the airbag vest feel like?

An advantage of Bhoof’s airbag vest is its comfort and lightweight design, which ensures it does not interfere with your performance. The vest is smooth and features an adjustable fit to ensure both safety and convenience. Additionally, it is easy to put on and take off.

Can I wear the airbag vest under a jacket?

No, you should always have the Bhoof Airbag vest as your last layer. Its stretchy material allows you to wear it in the summer with just one layer and in the winter with more layers and a thinner jacket. Get in touch with us at Bhoof if you need help with sizing: info@bhoof.com

How should the airbag vest fit?

The most important thing is that the airbag vest fits comfortably and doesn’t risk slipping off or out of place. It doesn’t matter if it’s a little loose; that’s a matter of personal preference. However, if you plan to wear several layers of clothing during the winter with a jacket under the airbag vest and your current size doesn’t fit over the jacket, you should consider going up a size. The vest is very stretchy, so if possible, try the smaller size first to see if it fits over the jacket.

Can I reuse my airbag vest if it was previously deployed in an accident?

Yes, you can reuse your airbag vest, but the gas cartridge must be replaced after each instance where the vest is deployed. These can be bought here at Bhoof.

How to replace your cartridge and activate the airbag vest:

  1. Unscrew the old cartridge.
  2. Remove any remaining air/gas inside your airbag:
Place the vest on a flat surface.
Press each part of the vest to deflate it completely.
To avoid damage to the inside of your airbag, do not bend or roll it. It may take some time to drain all the gas, but this step is important before inserting a new cartridge.
Open the inner zippers to gently flatten the inner tube.
  3. Remove the rubber part at the bottom of the trigger.
  4. Use the key provided to unscrew the screw located under the rubber cover.
  5. Insert the ball of the connecting strap into the center of the trigger, into the designated hole:
Pull the connection strap to ensure that the system is installed correctly.
  6. Tighten the screw and replace the rubber cover.
  7. Screw on a new gas cartridge.

Do I need to buy a new gas cartridge after it is triggered?

Yes, after each time the cartridge has been triggered, you will need to insert a new gas cartridge. These can be purchased separately from us at Bhoof.

Can I attach the airbag vest directly to the saddle?

Yes, the airbag vest attaches directly to the saddle with a safety line. If you have multiple saddles, you can buy extra safety lines – connectors – from us at Bhoof for convenience when changing saddles.

Can I compete in my airbag vest?

Yes, you can compete in your Bhoof airbag vest if you are over 18 years old, according to the Swedish competition regulations.

Our vest is CE marked and has the designation EN13158, which is an SS mark for protective clothing.

How should the airbag vest be stored when I am not using it?

  • Hang your airbag vest on a hanger with all the accessories, or store it in your Bhoof totebag.
  • Do not store it in environments with high temperatures, above 45°C, or high humidity.
  • Avoid placing the vest near an open flame.
